What is the Red Slope or “Roter Hang” in the Rheinhessen?

Winemaker Fritz Josef Schwibinger of Weingut Schwibinger describes the soil and exposure of the Red Slope or “Roter Hang” in the Rheinhessen region of Germany. Many of the most famous single vineyard Reislings from Germany are made on these steep, iron rich slopes. Fritz Joseph sat down with Ask a Winemaker in the town of Nierstein in 2009.
