This beginners guide begins by describing why putting ice in your wine glass is a bad idea. When you add ice to your wine, it waters down the taste of your wine. This can make it more difficult to taste the more subtle and complex flavors in a wine. Instead, put your wine in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes to cool down your wine
Then we describe the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine. As a general guide, one should refer to sparkling wine as such instead of calling it Champagne. Champagne is designated for sparkling wine from the champagne region of France. Calling all sparkling wine Champagne is a common beginner wine drinker mistake.
A lot of beginners to the wine world keep open wine for too long prior to drinking the entire bottle. Generally, a bottle of wine only lasts for a day or two. After that, your wine will taste off. This is especially true for red wine. If you want to keep an open bottle of wine longer, use a wine saver!
If you overfill your wine glass with wine, you may not be getting the full experience out of your wine. Wine glasses are designed to keep your wine at a proper temperature and to assist you with smelling a wine. As this guide describs, overfilling your wine glass is a mistake because it prevents the wine glass from having these abilities.
You should never hold your wine glass by the bowl. Although a lot of people do this, especially at wine tastings, it is a total beginner move. Instead, hold your wine glass by the stem to keep your wine at the proper temperature.
Always make sure you chill your wine prior to drinking it, including red wine. Use the 30-minute rule as a guide to ensure your wine is at the proper temperature.
You always want to store your wine in a dark, cool location. Beginners will often make the mistake of storing your wine in a warm location, such as the kitchen. Instead, try storing your wine in a different location to keep it cooler.
If you order a bottle of wine at a restaurant, do NOT smell the wine cork! This is a common beginner wine drinker mistake. You will not be able to judge the quality of the wine based on how the cork smells.
Be sure to let your wine breathe prior to drinking it. The mistake of not doing so will keep you from picking up on more subtle and complex flavors in a wine.
Last, a wine with a twist-off cap or a synthetic cork is not necessarily lower quality! Synthetic corks and twist-off caps preserve wine better than natural corks.
