Wine Review: Cloudy Bay Marlborough Chardonnay 2019

Instead of the more familiar Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc our Wine Director, David Allen MW tastes and really enjoys Cloudy Bay’s Marlborough Chardonnay 2019.

Cloudy Bay are one of the most famous producers of the Marlborough wine region on the South Island of New Zealand. It was established in 1985 as one of the first producers of Marlborough and today, the flagship Sauvignon Blanc is one of the country’s most sought-after wines.

The winery has multiple vineyards in the Wairau Valley sub region of Marlborough, as well as an additional estate and cellar door in Central Otago. Marlborough has a strong maritime climate with some of the longest sunshine hours of anywhere in the country, ideal for ripening grapes with concentrated flavor compounds.

The estate was started in 1985 by David Hohnen, the founder of Cape Mentelle Vineyards in Western Australia’s Margaret River region. Hohnen sold Cloudy Bay to Veuve Clicquot in 1990. In 2003, Veuve Clicquot was purchased by the multinational luxury goods group, LVMH.

Fruit for this wine comes from the Omaka, Brancott, Rapaura and Renwick sub-regions in the Wairau Valley and Southern Vales. Each parcel ferments separately in barriques to provide the winemakers with diverse blending options – hence quantities can vary each year.
