Wine Review: Yellow Tail South Eastern Australian Shiraz 2021

Our Wine Director, Master of Wine, David Allen sets out to taste the hugely popular Yellow Tail South Eastern Australian Shiraz 2021 to see if it can justify its claims to be the world’s favorite wine brand. I think it is safe to say he was pleasantly surprised.

Yellow Tail is a large Australian wine brand, owned by the Casella Family Brands. Located in Yenda of New South Wales, Yellow Tail have been producing their varietal wines since 2000.

Today. Yellow Tail is one of the largest selling wine brands in the world by volume, and is known for its wide range of single-variety wines from popular international grapes including Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. There is also sparkling and rosé wines with the entire portfolio focused at the value market.

The Casella family has a history in the wine industry dating back to Italy in the 1820s. Founders Maria and Filippo Casella relocated to Australia in 1957 and began to producing wine in the 1960s. Yellow Tail was formed as a brand to sell wines produced from grapes that Casella had previously sold to other companies for bulk wine production.

The name is derived from the yellow-footed wallaby which also features on the wine labels. The majority of the wine is designated with the South Eastern Australia appellation, which covers a huge swathe of land across multiple states.

By 2003, Yellow Tail had become the number one imported wine to the United States. By 2005, it was already selling millions of cases a year and accounted for 11-percent of all US wine imports, while representing 8-percent of all Australian wine production. In 2013, Yellow Tail bottled its one billionth bottle on wine.
